This program fights malnutrition among children & mothers by providing families the right tools and education about the best and most nutritious vegetable & fruit varieties, organic gardening techniques, how to raise small animals for protein, kitchen hygiene and understanding nutrition needs. Our integrated approach has caught fire because it is scientifically proven, culturally appropriate and economically relevant. It has grown from 10 to over 1,550 families - more than 12,000 rural people!

Challenge

Malnutrition affects 47% of children under the age of 5 and up to 70% among indigenous children. The mother's nutrition status affects her baby's health both while the baby is in the womb, and then while its main source of nutrients is the mother's milk. Chronic malnutrition has irreversible effects on brain and physical development of children when they do not get the correct balance of nutrients during the first 1,000 days of life. The result is often stunted kids and ongoing cycle of poverty.

Long-Term Impact

Improved nutrition after 1st harvest and enhanced feelings of self confidence & respect after 3 month. Better health for all family members and starting to sell surplus production after 6 month. Able to self-maintain the "Casa-Granja" and lower anemia rates for all family members after 12 month. Proof of its potential is its growth from 10 initial families to over 1550 in more than 10 rural communities! 80% of families continue with the Backyard Farm after graduating!
