Special Hope Network (SHN) currently has 5 Community Care Centers (CCC) that work with children with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers in specific compounds (high density neighborhoods) around Lusaka, Zambia. Each CCC works with 65 children and their caregiver, that is 325 children. We want to reach 65 more children by opening a new CCC in an unserved compound.

Challenge

In Lusaka, Zambia, children with intellectual disabilities are considered cursed and are hidden away in their homes. Therefore, kids who have disabilities are often left incredibly marginalized and vulnerable, and without a community of support and families that are unsure how to care for their child.

Long-Term Impact

As Special Hope Network looks to establish more Community Care Center we are changing the culture in compounds that will accept families whose kids have intellectual disabilities. Over the next 3 years we are planning to have 11 CCCs in 11 compounds. Imagine the impact of families that get served in these CCCs and those around them in the community.
