Region: Bihar, India

Bihar is one of the poorest states in India, with a poverty rate of around 33% (as of 2021). The state has a large population and limited resources, which has contributed to its economic struggles. The high population growth rate is one of the major reasons for poverty in India. This further leads to a high level of illiteracy, poor healthcare facilities, and a lack of access to financial resources. Also, high population growth affects the per capita income and makes per capita income even lower. It is expected that the population in India will reach 1.5 billion by 2026 and then India will be the largest nation in the world. But India’s economy is not growing at the same pace. This means a shortage of jobs. For this much population, near about 20 million new jobs would be required. The number of poor will keep on increasing if such a big number of jobs won’t created.

There are several reasons for the high levels of poverty in Bihar. One of the main reasons is the lack of economic opportunities. The state has a predominantly agricultural economy, and many farmers struggle to make ends meet due to poor infrastructure, inadequate irrigation facilities, and low productivity. In addition, there is a high level of unemployment, particularly among youth, which exacerbates poverty levels.

Another contributing factor to poverty in Bihar is inadequate access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation. The state has some of the lowest literacy rates in India, and many people lack access to basic healthcare services. This leads to high levels of malnutrition and poor health outcomes, which in turn exacerbate poverty levels.

Moreover, Bihar has been plagued by corruption and political instability, which has hindered its economic development. The state also suffers from a lack of adequate infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and water supply, which further exacerbates poverty levels.
