The Feb 2021 military coup & COVID-19 in Myanmar have caused a humanitarian crisis. The population is facing food shortages, lack of access to education, losses of jobs, and a health crisis. Inflation has jumped to 40% within 8 months and the economy has shrunk considerably. Schools and universities are still closed due to the political crisis and COVID-19 outbreak. The National University of the University of Myanmar (NUUM) provides educational opportunities for Myanmar students & teachers.

Challenge

Teachers, professors & other civil servants responded the Feb 1 Coup by going on strike through what is called the CDM. Most teachers who have participated in CDM have been removed by the Military Regime, and many have been persecuted. Over 70 CDM faculty are now working for NUUM as instructors to provide online learning opportunities for Myanmar students whose education has been disrupted. Internet service imposes a financial burden on these CDM teachers, on top of other basic needs.

Long-Term Impact

By educating the next generation of Myanmar students, NUUM instructors and administrators are making a long-term investment in their country. At the same time, NUUM is providing the instructors and administrators - who have lost their jobs as civil servants because of their participation in CDM - opportunities to put their skills to use and learn new skills while receiving support for their basic needs.
