The Blue Atlas Project is pioneering a project in Fort Portal, Uganda to build a farm with an innovative approach to fighting hunger and malnutrition with a focus on children. The Spirulina Development Insititute (SDI) is a multi-phase project that will build a sustainable farm which will grow spirulina, a complete nutritional profile. We will be partnering with 5 schools in Fort Portal by building and infusing drinking stations with spirulina to reach more than 1800 students
Challenge
According to the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey, 29% of Uganda's children under the age of five are stunted, 4% wasted and only 15% children in Uganda ate a minimally acceptable diet. Also, 53% of Ugandan children ages 6-59 months and 32% of women population of age 15-49 were anaemic which is a major concern that leads to increased maternal and child mortality and poor birth outcomes. Malnutrition kills many Ugandans. One in every 16 children dies before their fifth birthday.
Long-Term Impact
As a multi-phase project, BA will be overseeing the partnership and sustainable growth plan and will expand to reach children across Uganda in partnership with the Ministry of Education and other NGO partners. The long-term impact is helping to alleviate the conditions and illnesses that malnutrition leads to. Ensuring greater physical, mental and emotional health along with lowering premature deaths associated with it. All while creating a model for SDI to become self-sustaining after 5 years.
