This project will provide a quality learning facility for more than 300 toddlers and school-age children. While the world becomes increasingly competitive, children in rural areas risk getting left behind by not receiving the quality education they deserve. By providing books, materials and qualified teachers, YUM hopes its award-winning preschool and library, the only one in the area, will improve the learning habits of children, stimulating a sense of curiosity and intellectual development.
Challenge
Many of the public schools surrounding the Cipanas area have very little funding. In fact, most of the children only attend school half-days due to the lack of teachers and space. Besides that, not one of the 67 schools in the area provide books to read for the children, let alone a library. Since school hours are limited, the children need a space to learn and develop mentally from a very young age. It is proven that high-quality preschool greatly impacts children living in or near poverty.
Long-Term Impact
This project aims to improve the quality of education available for children in the community. In its fifth year, the library has managed to accommodate up to 1000 visits per month. This project will improve the literacy of children, youth and adults in the surrounding area, enhancing their ability and comfort to use books for information and knowledge. As for the preschool, it has seen close to 150 children move on to elementary education, encouraging them to be more creative and confident.
