Compassiva has 4 projects; the biggest is HOME (LAR), which seeks to respond to refugees' most basic and urgent needs as they rebuild their lives in Brazil. 4 pillars work together to ensure that refugees are able to restore their autonomy: Portuguese course; legal assistance from general documentation to degree revalidation in partnership with UNHCR; support for finding work; and general support, ensuring the most basic needs such as food, housing and medical care are met.
Challenge
There are currently over 11,000 recognised refugees, 36% of whom are Syrian, in Brazil. Meanwhile, last year there were over 80,000 requests for refugee status. This growth is largely due to the Venezuelan crisis, which has seen millions flee into neighbouring countries, putting Brazil on the front line of a global refugee crisis. These refugees need support to get back on their feet in Brazil; to find work, they need to have their qualifications recognised and, crucially, learn Portuguese.
Long-Term Impact
The project will teach 265 refugees Portuguese over one year, equipping them to work and live independently. We have one class exclusively for women so they are able to learn in a comfortable environment if they prefer this to a mixed class. We will offer skills training to at least 40 students, in partnership with employers. All of this empowers refugees to work in Brazil and live independently. As they work to achieve this, we offer 50 food parcels per month to the families in most need.
