This project will allow 50 vulnerable primary age children to continue their education whilst instilling the knowledge and confidence to successfully integrate into secondary school. Our teachers deliver crucial gender equality materials to both girls and boys, teaching them to respect one another and build confidence. Maronka is more than just a school, it is a safe home for over 100 children, enabling them to remain in education and providing them with a stable environment which to grow.
Challenge
Sierra Leone's educational system has been ravaged by war, disease and natural disasters. Many children remain out of school with those in school often subjected to poor quality teaching and corporal punishment. The outlook for girls in Sierra Leone is poor with UNICEF estimating 39% are married before their 18th birthday and pregnant girls still banned from school. All of this is particularly true in the district where EducAid's Maronka Primary School is located.
Long-Term Impact
Sierra Leone's new President is investing in education to ensure that every child has access to free education. EducAid is also committed to free, quality, safe, gender specific education with Maronka primary school currently serving as a model school in our teacher-training network impacting over 25,000 students. Maronka will continue as a hub for learning in the Port Loko district as education is made a top priority in Sierra Leone.
