A central part of GEC is our Changemaker Program where students learn about famous figures past & present, historically significant events, and Pan-Africanism. Students also participate in community events throughout Ghana and engage with individuals making a local community impact. This helps students reflect on an ever-changing society and their important role within it. We believe this work equips our students to be the next generation of change-making leaders of the Diaspora and the world.
Challenge
The students we work with in Accra lack opportunities to gain exposure to learning experiences outside of their immediate circle and across the continent. Due to challenges from cyclical and generational poverty, students and their families are not aware of and not able to access exchanges with other leaders, other communities, and other organizations. The chance to learn about Ghanain and other Pan-African initiatives around them provides knowledge to bring back to their own community.
Long-Term Impact
Connecting our students to local changemakers allows them to hear personal stories from other African leaders who have positively impacted their communities in innovative and creative ways. Seeing themselves reflected in community leaders demonstrates how their work matters and ripples into a larger social impact outside the communities they know. Long-term we want our local Ghanaian board to take over leadership fully. Investing in student changemakers now creates leaders for the future.
