Trafficking, although illegal under Indian law, remains a significant problem. Women are frequently trafficked through India for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation, forced and bonded labour. A specific centre of El Shaddai Charitable Trust caters to these women and children and has started a project in one of the red light area, Mumbai where more than 4,000 women work and daily earn through prostitution. This project rescues women and children and relocates them to a safe home.
Challenge
Today, there are millions of children of sex workers in India. They are vulnerable to falling prey to traffickers. They grow up surrounded by brothels, drugs and prostitution because their mothers work in these red light areas. The centre will rescue trafficked women and children from the dangers of Mumbai's red light areas and provide them with a loving home, food, counselling, education and repatriation.
Long-Term Impact
This project will give 500 trafficked women and children in Mumbai's red light areas a caring and supportive environment, equipping them with the resources to have successful futures and positively contribute to their community. Due to the complex nature of their needs and previous trauma, children's home is made available with all the needs.
