In Vietnam, there are an estimated 22,000 children growing up in government orphanages. Over half of these children have disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to vastly increase the number of children in orphanages. This project will help these orphanages to develop family placement programmes, whereby they can move children out of the orphanage and into local foster families where they will be nurtured to reach their full potential.

Challenge

In Vietnam, there are an estimated 22,000 children within government orphanages. Over half of these children have disabilities. Decades of research shows that orphanages cannot provide the one-to-one care, love and attention a child needs to develop and thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to vastly increase the number of children living in orphanages. According to government reports, some 1,500 children have been orphaned by COVID in Ho Chi Minh City alone.

Long-Term Impact

This project has the potential to impact 22,000+ orphaned and abandoned children, across Vietnam, giving them the chance to grow up within local, loving families where they will be nurtured to reach their full potential. "Living in an orphanage is like living in a box - there are so many rules. In a family, there are rules too, but there is also a sense of being free. I've learnt so much from my foster family. They have taught me the skills I need for life." Foster child
