The COVID-19 has deeply impacted tourist communities. There are families with ZERO income struggling to bring food to their tables. We have been providing basic support to those in the most desperate situation, at this point 250 packages of food have been distributed to the most vulnerable families in Drake Bay. This fund was created to provide small donations to communities in Osa Peninsula. The gifts to local groups were used for community improvements such as drinking water systems, etc.
Challenge
Drake Bay and its surrounding communities are small rural communities, where most of the population depends directly or indirectly on tourism. Given the world situation, tourism has been one of the most affected sectors. The elderly in Drake Bay often survived with the support of their children and close relatives, who at this time due to the fall in tourism are going to be out of work. In addition, these older adults are in very isolated communities, which generates greater risk.
Long-Term Impact
We are collecting goods and cleaning supplies for the most vulnerable population at the moment - the elderly people of Drake Bay. We hope that by supporting them, we will be able to reduce their need to look for informal jobs to survive and their risk of getting sick. We want them to stay at home and have food, cleaning supplies or medicines, to be safe and have their dignity. There are at least 53 people 65 or older living in poverty and isolation in Drake Bay. They need help.
