Education Matters is committed to supporting educational access for refugee students. In 2022, we have a total of 7 students at USAP Community School (10% of our students) from Tongogara Refugee Camp. In 2020-21 USAP refugee alumni launched TWEENS, a tutoring program and youth center in the camp. This project will raise funds for us to be able to continue covering all costs for refugee students to access high quality and transformative value-based education at our school and to support TWEENS.
Challenge
Educational opportunities for refugee youth are extremely limited. At Tongogara Refugee Camp in Zimbabwe a camp of 17,000+ refugees from mainly from DRC, Burundi and Rwanda, the camp school ends with O level/10th grade. Bright and motivated refugee students cannot walk to any other school to complete high school or hope of university and UNHCR and other groups operating in the camp only offer vocational courses such as carpentry. There is no electricity or Intenet in camp for online learning.
Long-Term Impact
This project will allow refugee students currently with no options to access a high quality education that will open doors for their future. By educating these motivated young displaced people, we see a deep impact no only on themselves and their immediate families, but on the refugee communities from which they come , The refugee alumni of our program have excelled at university and have give back with social impact projects and on refugee issues far beyond their immediate communities.
