This project will strengthen and empower 100 women who are primary caregivers in vulnerable households in Calabar, Cross River State with the required knowledge, skills, inputs and financial habits to facilitate their exit from extreme poverty as well as providing an operational structure for sustainability.
Challenge
About 70% of families in Cross River State live in extreme poverty and 15.1% of children are out of school with Calabar metropolis having a significant percentage. Most of these children come from vulnerable households whose primary caregivers are women and economic capacity is too low to provide basic needs (health, education and food) for them. Many of them suffer from malnutrition and cannot concentrate on learning even when they attend school.
Long-Term Impact
This project will strengthen and empower 100 vulnerable households in a poverty stricken community equipping them with the knowledge, skills, agricultural production capacity and financial habits to exit from extreme poverty for good in a sustainable manner. Community participation, knowledge transfer and the establishment of a savings culture will create a ripple effect to other related families in the area so that up to 1000 families may be ultimately empowered out of poverty in 8-10 years.
