Fikelela Childrens Centre is based in Khayelitsha - a township in Cape Town that has high numbers of orphans and abandoned children. One in three adults is HIV+, and the community has a high level of unemployment, crime and shack housing. Many struggle to get enough food. We run a children's home to care for the children while we find a loving 'forever family' in the community. We support the foster parents for as long is necessary - with food parcels, emotional support, and advice

Challenge

In Khayelitsha more than 30% of pregnant mothers are HIV+. This means that there are many orphans and abandoned children, and often they do not have an extended family member to take them in. The community also has very high levels of unemployment, crime and shack housing.

Long-Term Impact

Orphans that might have grown up with serious social problems are raised in loving families. Every year we place 20 orphans with foster homes and offer short term residential care to 30 children.
