One in ten Danish children is negatively affected by parental alcohol consumption, and at least 122,000 Danish children grow up in families with outright abuse. The Blue Cross has two houses for children that offer care, counseling and treatment in an alcohol-free environment. They can spend time with their peers and seek support for the harm caused by their parents' addiction.
Challenge
One in ten Danish children is negatively affected by parental alcohol consumption, and at least 122,000 Danish children grow up in families with outright abuse. Recent studies on young people revealed a culture where alcohol is perceived essential in collective intoxication, construction of identities, positive experiences and expectations to alcohol and reaffirming friendships.
Long-Term Impact
Blue Cross Denmark builds relations and trust with both the users of its treatment services and with their children. By offering a space for children to speak freely about their parents addiction and the effect is has on them, Blue Cross empowers youth to lead drug free lives and create healthy social networks. This gives children a chance at leading a healthy, successful life.
