Inequalities created by climate change, conflict and COVID-19 threaten the lives of the families we work with. Now more than ever they need the programmes we have developed over 20 years that support every family member. Girls protected from teenage pregnancy so they finish school and have better options in life; boys with knowledge and direction needed to grow into responsible men; mothers kept safe in pregnancy and childbirth; men and women with lifeskills for growth and empowerment.
Challenge
Drought, economic fallout from the pandemic, the war in Ukraine means food basics like flour and oil tripled in price and families are going hungry and struggling to survive. Overwhelmed health systems cannot deliver services. Handwashing is critical but homes don't have running water. Vulnerable girls and women are being subjected to child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and life-threatening pregnancy. Without support the poverty cycle continues to the next generation.
Long-Term Impact
Change does not come overnight but slowly with each person, household, volunteer and donor it grows. We're proud to have supported more than 1,904,334 beneficiaries since we launched in 2002. However, our work is nowhere near over. Our focus on supporting girls and women while involving boys and men in the process addresses inequalities, creates lasting change and lifts communities out of poverty. #ShiningALightOnInequality
