Millions of rural children in China do not have access to quality education and are enrolled in schools where they lack English teachers. This project provides weekly online English lessons to more than 3,000 disadvantaged children. Lessons are delivered by trained volunteers based all over the world. We have more than fifteen years' experience of training and supporting volunteers to teach English in China.
Challenge
English is one of the three core subjects in the Chinese curriculum and one of the areas on which children are tested and compared throughout their school and work life. The lack of qualified English teachers in rural schools significantly contribute to rural children's low rate of high school or vocational school enrollment, which is less than 40%. This project supports the English education of more than 3,000 rural children in China.
Long-Term Impact
The project provides weekly English lessons for a year to disadvantaged children in rural China to help them gain confidence in English and pass their key examinations, which will optimize their access to higher education (i.e., high school and university) and work opportunities in the future.
