iPartner India aims to empower 300 vulnerable girls and women in the urban slums of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. These girls and women face gender-based violence and abuse at home and extensive limitations on their ability to move freely and to make decisions affecting their work, education and marriage. We aim to build the leadership and negotiation skills of the young girls and women in the community through gender and sports training to end gender-based violence, discrimination, and stigma.
Challenge
According to the Global Gender Gap report 2021, the gender gap in India has widened to 62.5%, largely due to women's inadequate representation in politics, technical and leadership roles. Women in India experience abuse every three minutes. Gender inequality results in unequal opportunities and with the prevalence of gender discrimination, and social norms, girls become exposed to the possibility of early marriage, pregnancy, poor education and health, sexual abuse, exploitation, and violence.
Long-Term Impact
iPartner India aims to end gender-based discrimination and violence in the community through project interventions. We also aim to build the leadership and negotiation skills of 300 young girls and women in the community. We also aim to achieve the change in behaviour and attitude of the community especially men and boys towards girls through civic participation. Through sports training of 60 girls, we aim to enable career choices for them and challenge gender stereotypes and stigma.
