During this difficult time of drought, children in AFCA's programs have been affected. While we have helped keep them alive and healthy through the AIDS pandemic, it is tragic that hunger would take them. With our sustainable projects, we establish long-term solutions through community gardens, sisal production and training for the communities we serve. The specialized training is for HIV+ moms so they can provide food and other necessities for their families.

Challenge

Kenya has been experiencing severe droughts for various years now, followed by intense flooding. This has affected food prices, driving them too high for many families, especially those who are women headed, leaving them unable to provide for their children. When the children don't have enough food, they stop going to school, continuing a cycle of poverty and need.

Long-Term Impact

HIV+ guardians to children will receive huge benefits from these projects, including: jobs and income, much needed nutritious food, training in how to prepare nutritious meals, training in how to grow food with no water, the ability to obtain seeds for an established seed bank, funds from food sold, savings from food consumed from the garden, and the knowledge that they can take care of themselves during a drought or flooding.
