The head of the Covid-19 effort in Haiti is hoping for availability of 3,000 hospital beds. There are actually only 70 beds currently available, of these 40 are provided by St Luke's Hospital. We are gearing up to provide additional beds, we have separate staff for the COVID-19 patients, and we are desperately looking to be ready with equipment (mostly PPE) for our employees. Community support remains a central focus of St Luke's programs: we distribute chlorox for handwashing, masks and food
Challenge
Little by little Covid-19 is spreading through Haiti, one of the most vulnerable countries in the Carribbean Area. The Head of the Covid-19 Effort in Haiti is hoping for availability of 3,000 hospital beds, but only 70 beds are currently available. The sanitary system is weak and population is already worn out from previous lockdowns due to protests and social unrest: especially the most vulnerables communties need help - refugee women and children from the gun violence happening around Haiti.
Long-Term Impact
Community support remains a vital and central focus of the St Luke programs . Major components of the St Luke programs have always included job creation within our communities, public health education, supporting our employees with food in times of crisis, and food distribution to those in need. COVID-19 funding will help us with these outreach programs in several ways: distributing chlorox and teaching the importance of handwashing, supporting the production of masks
