ANIMA is an educational organization with the goal to bring together the job market and the world of education by providing at-risk Uruguayan youth with tuition-free education in the areas of IT and business administration. Our students run an Scholar ESports club where they can learn abilities while they play. From running the club, as well as Social Emotional skills. It started as an USEmbassy in Montevideo initiative but we now look forward for funding to sustain it in the long run.
Challenge
In Uruguay, educational disengagement during high school is one of the country's greatest problems, with barely 40% of the population completing high school. This dropout is attributed not only to early engagement in the labor market among the most vulnerable population, but also to a loss of interest due to the perceived disconnection between what is taught in secondary education and its usefulness for the labor market. Uruguay has also one of the highest youth unemployment rates in LATAM.
Long-Term Impact
ANIMA firmly believes in the potential of our youth, and the transformative power of education and quality work in the quest for learning. By providing a safe and free space for our youth to learn skills that are demanded in the work space today, and that satisfy their interest and needs, we are contributing to increasing their chances of finishing high school and reducing the unemployment rate in Uruguay. Yearly we support over 200 young people in our program.
