People in India's informal housing settlements (aka slums) live one hardship away from slipping into an inextricable cycle of extreme poverty. Those hardships are often health related; an accident or a chronic but addressable consequence of poor nutrition. We support the independence and self-sufficiency of more than 20,000 people in Jaipur, India through 3 health clinics using education, treatment, and aid to help people avoid or recover from health and food security setbacks.
Challenge
The Government of Rajasthan estimates that there are 680,000 people living in slums in Jaipur. Resourceful and resilient by necessity, so many of these residents have nonetheless fallen into a cycle of extreme poverty they are unable to break on their own. An injury suffered by a day-laborer immediately eliminates the wages supporting a family. Poor nutrition leads to anemia for an expectant mother and, ultimately, an unhealthy newborn. Such events can lead to extreme, generational poverty.
Long-Term Impact
The energy, resilience and perseverance of the residents of India's informal housing settlements is unparalleled. Enabling an injured day-laborer to get back to work quickly and helping their family with food in the meantime keeps a pregnant mother and her newborn child healthy, keeps children in school, and allows a family the independence and self-sufficiency that creates pride in the present and hope in the future. Families avoid extreme poverty today and are prepared for a better tomorrow.
