Soy Nina (I am a Girl) works to empower girls to prevent all types of gender-based violence. We believe that early intervention and prevention is the strongest resource to fight the gender inequality. Our goal is to guide girls into becoming confident and brave. Girls who are self-aware, make informed decisions, and believe in the power of their dreams.

Challenge

Girls and women have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. During the past two years the gender-based violence that girls in Costa Rica suffer has been aggravated, especially in the communities we serve. The girls that are part of Soy Nina live in vulnerable neighborhoods where there is a prevalence of drug trafficking, and low levels of education, among other problems. Typically, girls do not get to the opportunity to make informed decisions regarding their own life.

Long-Term Impact

Since February 2018 Club Nina has positively impacted more than 200 girls. Our long-term goal is to be able to replicate our program in other communities in Costa Rica, especially in rural areas where the gender-based violence experienced by girls is higher. According to institutions like the World Bank, investing in a girl translates into a more prosperous and healthy world.
