Wedu established the Sujata Baskota Honor Education Funding to celebrate Sujata's life & commitment to her community. Sujata, an inspiring young woman in Wedu's leadership program in Nepal, died of pneumonia in July 2016, despite the Wedu community's best efforts to get her necessary medical care. This opportunity will allow other women to continue Sujata's legacy of leadership and positive social change by pursuing higher education and becoming changemakers in their communities.

Challenge

Women, especially in Asia, face enormous barriers to higher education, often because of inadequate financial support. Studies show that when educational opportunities and resources are scarce, women are less likely to get them. Only 74 women are enrolled in tertiary education for every 100 men in Asia (UNESCO Institute for Statistics). We want to change this imbalance by financing tertiary education for high-achieving women with the same passion and drive that Sujata exhibited.

Long-Term Impact

Funding women's higher education has a multiplier effect on improving the development of their communities and countries as a whole. Together, we can work towards a world where half of all leaders are women by support the next generation of female leaders, in honor of Sujata Baskota.
