This project will equip and maintain a community school in a rural village in the mountains of Northeast Brazil. As well as providing a holistic and joyful education to over 150 children, the school seeks to empower the next generation to be economically autonomous and to be guardians of the environment in this important ecological reserve and resist the growing urbanisation and destruction of natural beauty spots and wildlife habitats.
Challenge
The Capao Valley, an ecological sanctuary, is situated in north Brazil in a protected environmental park, rich in biodiversity. In recent decades this small agricultural town has become a tourist hub. Despite bringing economic opportunities to some, this has impacted the local culture, causing a loss of local identity and autonomy, the exploitation of natural and human resources and an increased urbanisation which threatens to destroy the very treasures that first attracted visitors.
Long-Term Impact
For more than 29 years we have developed this mission, transforming the perspectives and opportunities of children. Many students have managed to attend college, some are even part of the pedagogical team as director and teachers. With the continuity of this work, we can continue to positively impact the community, inspiring healthier and more sustainable practices, contributing to the preservation of natural wealth and building pathways for future generations to have new perspectives.
