Life skills Education (LSE), can influence youth behaviors in a way that improves sexual reproductive health outcomes. 400 in-school girls who have reached puberty will benefit from this fund. We will hold a large group training session of 100 pupils from 4 different schools on LSE, then break into smaller groups of 10 with 2 mentors to deeply discuss challenges affecting young girls in achieving their education and dreams. Long term mentoring will ensure behavior change in the young girls.
Challenge
Young girls have unique health and development needs ,they are faced by enormous challenges such as teenage pregnancies which often compromise their health and future. Every year an estimated 21 M girls aged 15- 19 become pregnant in developing regions. Kenya demographic health survey (2014) ,indicates that 15% of women age 15-19 has at least one birth ,where the prevalence rate of our intended project area Nyamira has the second highest rate of early childbearing at 27.8%.
Long-Term Impact
400 girls will have been trained on life skills Education in the next 1 year and mentoring will be a work in progress .Involvement of the women, girls, parents and the local authorities will ensure reduction of teenage pregnancies and retention of girls in schools . The young girls will be able to realize their dreams, increase self awareness and self esteem and improve their academic performances as well.
