We are helping families to grow their own food. We work within a community of families with children with disabilities in Livingstone, Zambia. The economic situation there is desperate. The cost of food has risen to such heights that many cannot afford to buy even the staple cornmeal. In 2020, when the pandemic crisis compounded the already dire situation, we began a monthly distribution of staple food items to these families. In 2021 we started a communal farm.
Challenge
The community that we serve has always struggled to provide basic necessities like food, shelter, medical care and education, and now COVID-19 has further disrupted Zambia's already devastated economy. These families need to rely on themselves for food security, instead of depending on a government that ignores them.
Long-Term Impact
While delivering food helped people through the immediate crisis, the communal farm will provide for several of our community's needs in the future: food, income, work, and the ability to be in control of their own destiny.
