A child with a disability has a challenging life anywhere in the world. In Nepal, these difficulties are compounded by terrain, remoteness of villages, and cultural stigma about disabilities. Unable to go to school or help their families, many children with disabilities are trapped at home, neglected and ostracized. In rural areas, where even basic medical care is limited, clubfoot and childhood injuries often go untreated and can develop into severe conditions.

In Nepal, medical care is often out of reach both physically and financially, and a child's untreated burn or broken bone can lead to a lifetime of disability. Through a combination of surgery, physical therapy, prosthetics and a big dose of TLC, the team at the Hospital and Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children helps thousands of children walk (and play!) every year.

Challenge

A child with a disability has a challenging life anywhere in the world. In Nepal, these difficulties are compounded by terrain, remoteness of villages, and cultural stigma about disabilities. Unable to go to school or help their families, many children with disabilities are trapped at home, neglected and ostracized. In rural areas, where even basic medical care is limited, clubfoot and childhood injuries often go untreated and can develop into severe conditions.

Long-Term Impact

Dr. Banskota firmly believes that every child deserves to be loved, educated and accepted in their communities. Over the last 25 years, over 53,000 children have been healed by the HRDC team, and every year the number of patients treated grows. Whether taking their first steps, learning to play soccer or just going to school with their neighbors, HRDC helps children with disabilities in Nepal live full happy lives.
