This project will provide crucial health screening for common but serious health conditions impacting this community such as Malaria, HIV, Hepatitis B, Hypertension and Diabetes. These conditions are associated with a high morbidity and mortality but are easily treatable if diagnosed early. Eye screening will also be available as good vision is critical for individuals to work and provide for themselves and their families. Health counselling is also provided to improve good health practices.
Challenge
Access to public health services in Ghana is a national and social issue due to: 1. Lack of basic health care facilities within the communities 2. Distance to health care facilities (lack of good roads, electricity, facility building and lack of funding) 3. Lack of income to afford basic first aid materials or medicines. These issues result in death of citizens from minor injuries and illnesses that could be easily treated with basic first aid or medicines.
Long-Term Impact
This project will screen in total approximately 800 indivudals in the first 3 months. There will be a reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with illnesses such as malaria which is common in these communities. There will be an increased awareness of common health issues and health facilities available, resulting in an increased uptake of healthcare facilities and overall improved outcomes. Improved quality of life for those benefitting from free glasses.
