During the month of August 2018 a group of 40 doctors, including specialists and medical volunteers, assisted more than 950 people from 10 indigenous communities of La Gran Sabana in Venezuela. All epidemiological data and biological samples necessary to determine the health problems of the population will be collected and the necessary medicines will be given to treat the detected diseases. We'll repeat the medical mission every 6 months. The next one will be during the month of April 2019.
Challenge
According World Health Organization more than 400,000 cases of malaria have occurred during 2017 in Venezuela, most of them in Bolivar and Amazonas State. Hundreds of indigenous children have died due to measles, respiratory diseases and diarrhea that year. The lack of doctors and medication in indigenous territory is widespread and there is a mortality that is not registered. This project will provide medical care and medicines to more than 3,500 indigenous people.
Long-Term Impact
We will provide medical care to more than 3,500 people in 12 isolated and hard-to-access indigenous communities for the first time. Never before they have been attended by doctors and, much less, received workshops for first aid. This will allow us to know what kind of diseases this population suffers and treat them properly, as well as reduce mortality due to infectious diseases and accidents that do not receive timely attention, and reduce cases of malaria.
