Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya opened in 1992, and at present is home to 194,000 refugees. More refugees arrive everyday due to ongoing insecurity in South Sudan, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo. IsraAID provides psychosocial support, WASH training, livelihoods and women's empowerment programming to help change the condition of the refugees. Each program emphasizes capacity building to offer beneficiaries skills to create a better future.
Challenge
Due to a tulmoltus climate of war in the region Kakuma has become a safe haven for refugees. In Kakuma 4, IsraAID currently focuses its efforts, on building the capacity of women and youth while offering support to the most vulnerable within the camp including new arrivals. Lack of proper sanitation and hygiene education along with violence and poverty, make Kakuma a difficult place to live.
Long-Term Impact
By providing training and support for refugees and the host community to be self-reliant and self-sufficient, IsraAID is able to create a lasting impact. The long-term effects of this holistic approach can be seen throughout the camp from the child friendly spaces, to the working sanitation systems. IsraAID is currently working with tens of thousands of refugees, encouraging anyone who is motivated to join in.
