Belize Bird Rescue is the only multi-species avian rescue facility in Belize, rescuing orphaned, injured and illegally trafficked parrots and other wild birds of the Central American rainforest.
Challenge
Belize is a small country with a big heart, but limited resources. Belize Bird Rescue is its only avian rescue centre, working with every species of wild bird, and specialising in wild-caught parrots liberated from the illegal pet trade. We provide a country-wide rescue service and veterinary care for medical emergencies. Many of our parrots require years of rehabilitation before release. This project will help to save and release hundreds of wild birds throughout 2022.
Long-Term Impact
BBR's programs and facilities give rescued and confiscated birds a chance of freedom, making enforcement less controversial for the Government. Historically, with nowhere to place confiscated parrots, illegal poaching and pet-keeping was ignored. Tourism is a major part of the economy and the abundance of 500+ species of parrots and other wild birds draw tourists to Belize - crucial in the wake of covid-19. Every bird released has a positive impact on wild populations, and on public perceptions.
