Nyaka's SGBV Program works to prevent sexual & gender based violence against anyone- especially children. We work with the community to create an environment where SGBV is not acceptable or tolerated. And whenever it is reported to us we take action. We have 4 healing centres where we provide medical care, counselling and legal advocacy for all survivors of sexual and gender based violence- girls and boys, women and men. We supported more than 120 survivors in 2020

Challenge

Our project began in 2015 and we have supported almost 250 survivors to date, with almost half of those cases being reported to us in 2020. In 2018, UNICEF found that in Uganda, one in four girls aged 13-17 years and one in ten boys aged 13-17 years reported sexual violence in the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a 'shadow pandemic' of increased cases of sexual and gender based violence.

Long-Term Impact

Long-term effect will be a decrease in the number of rapes, with the ultimate goal being to eradicate sexual violence as a whole. Beneficiaries will be given tools that will transform their lives from victims to victors. Nyaka's SGBV program (formerly known as EDJA) serves a district of over 250, 000 people, and hopes to replicate healing centers throughout East Africa. We want all children and adults to live in a society safe from sexual and gender based violence.
