The Skiatook Lake Shoreline Stabilization Project is a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Skiatook. The goal of the project is to stabilize the shoreline of Skiatook Lake by planting native vegetation and installing erosion control measures. The project is being implemented in phases. Phase I, which was completed in 2018, focused on stabilizing the shoreline along the west side of the lake. Phase II, which is currently underway, is focused on stabilizing the shoreline along the east side of the lake.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023. Once the project is complete, it will help to protect the shoreline of Skiatook Lake from erosion and improve the water quality of the lake.

Initiatives

1. Planting native vegetation 2. Installing erosion control measures 3. Removing invasive species 4. Conducting public outreach

Challenges

The project is complex and requires a coordinated effort from multiple agencies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the lead agency for the project, but it is also working with the City of Skiatook, the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and other agencies. It is expensive and requires funding from multiple sources. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $10 million. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing $5 million in funding, and the City of Skiatook is providing $5 million in funding.

Long Term Impacts

The project will help to protect the shoreline of Skiatook Lake from erosion and improve the water quality of the lake. Erosion is a major problem at Skiatook Lake, and it is estimated that the project will help to prevent $10 million in erosion damage over the next 50 years. The project will also help to improve the water quality of the lake by reducing nutrient loading from stormwater runoff and agricultural fields. This will increase wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities at the lake. The project will create new habitat for fish and wildlife, and it will also improve recreational opportunities at the lake by creating new boat ramps, fishing piers, and hiking trails.
