Katulikire Health Center (KHC) serves internally displaced persons from the Lord's Resistance Army rebellion (LRA) in Northern Uganda and refugees from East Africa. Almost 30,000 people have remained in the area. KHC provides their primary care including curative and preventive services, but sicker patients are referred to further away centers, which are often cost-prohibitive. We will upgrade to a HC 4 to provide in/outpatient services to ensure we can treat the poorest, sickest patients.

Challenge

A majority of the population in Katulikire Parish has no access to affordable quality medical services. The population experiences frequent malaria, dysentery, typhoid, and pneumonia. Government health facilities often lack medical personnel or drugs. Often, patients cannot afford private health centers and resort to self-treatment. At Katulikire Health Centre, treatment is given at reduced fee since we are a not-for-profit health institution, but presently we are a HC3 offering limited services

Long-Term Impact

We have approval from the Uganda Ministry of Health to expand to a health center IV, which will allow us to provide affordable, comprehensive health services to a patient population which is currently without. In order to upgrade, we must expand our facilities to provide additional medical and surgical services. Once the health center has been completed, it will be self-sufficient. Therefore, this project will bring long-lasting, comprehensive healthcare to a poor, rural, refugee/IDP population.
