Good Sense Dogs wishes to continue our work with the most under-served and in need pets, pet owners and pet lovers of the Sacramento Valley. Our four programs help to make Sacramento a kinder place for both animals and people alike. We provide assistance to pet owners who need help caring for their animals, educate groups about pet care and ownerships who do not receive the information elsewhere, rescue and rehome animals in dire situations, and make therapy dog visits to seniors and the poor

Challenge

For most pet owners, the idea of what will happen to their pet should they become gravely ill or die is not an unanswered question. Most people have family, friends, or a plan of some sort to ensure the safety and continued care of their loved pet. This is not true for the homeless pet owning population who are terminally ill and dying. Good Sense Dogs has partnered with Joshua's House, the first hospice for the homeless on the west coast, to create a safe place for those beloved pets.

Long-Term Impact

Our rescue, train and re-home program will offer a solution to dozens of terminally ill homeless people, making the transition into hospice an easier choice. Often the pets of the homeless serve as both family and friend, and many homeless will not seek the medical help they need because of their concern for their pets. In addition, we will offer a hands on learning experience for ten to twenty at risk or under-served people seeking vocational skills to gain experience and independence.
