Our aim is to renovate 20 houses, providing a healthier and more dignified environment to families who face the condition of extreme poverty in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We wish to make the following improvements: Provide access to water and adequate sanitary facilities, electrical wiring, ventilation and lighting, also to reduce infiltration of the roof and walls. The main objective is to restore these people's confidence and to improve these families' life quality, making their house, their home

Challenge

There is a strong relationship between housing and public health. Lack of basic sanitation, ventilation and clean water in early childhood can compromise a child's physical and cognitive development and can even result in fatalities. However, housing with good lighting and clean drinking water promotes education and decreases hospitalizations. Our challenge is to make it possible for 20 families to live in basic conditions such as running water, sewage, safe electrical installations, and windows

Long-Term Impact

Instituto Dara is a world pioneer in intersectoral work with social determinants of health, housing included. Through an understanding that poverty is multidimensional, Dara believes that the social transformation of vulnerable families is only possible when several areas of human development are addressed simultaneously and in an integrated manner. Through co-created goals, each of the 20 selected families will improve 5 areas of their lives, such as promoting and improving housing conditions.
