In Manikaji, an isolated community of subsistence farmers living high up the steep and sandy volcanic ash slopes of Mount Abang, everybody was illiterate before East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) opened a school in January 2001. Since then, we've educated more than 300 children and sponsored 4 to university; all funded by private sector donations. This project will enable EBPP to continue providing quality, relevant & inclusive education for Manikaji children from ages 7-19.
Challenge
The community requested education for their children as their priority when interviewed by EBPP in 2000. Until now EBPP school is the only accessible school for dozens of families because it's in their hamlet. The nearest government school is 6km away (2 hours walk) down a steep and winding dirt track and the nearest high school is 20km away, with no public transport.
Long-Term Impact
By continuing to provide quality education from primary though to high school, we enable them to graduate school with the knowledge & life skills needed to establish local business, seek meaningful employment or continue to university. From 2023, our high school students will learn dryland permaculture & agroforestry to improve soil fertility for planting nutritious food , multi-beneficial trees and cash crops to lead their community towards eventual sustainable social and economic development
