Description | Wikitext | Child labour is a serious and widespread issue in Rajasthan, which affects millions of children and deprives them of their basic rights to education, health and protection. According to Census 2011, Rajasthan accounts for nearly 10% of the total child labour in India, with more than 1.2 million children engaged in various forms of work. Child labour is prevalent in various sectors such as agriculture, mining, gem polishing, carpet weaving, tourism and domestic work. Many children work long hours for meagre wages and face exploitation, abuse and violence. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem of child labour in Rajasthan, as many families lost their livelihoods and income sources due to lockdowns and restrictions. Many children dropped out of school or could not access online education due to lack of resources or connectivity. Some children were forced to migrate with their parents or relatives to other states or cities in search of work. Some children were trafficked or lured by agents who promised them jobs or money. The pandemic also disrupted the functioning of child protection mechanisms such as child helplines, child welfare committees and rescue operations. |
