Description | Wikitext | The Down syndrome community of Karachi is marginalized and lacks opportunities for independent living. The Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP) is a one-stop solution advocating for the value, acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome and providing quality, subsidized services to them and their families including Early Intervention therapies (Physical, Occupational and Speech), Education, Skills Development, Healthcare, Family Support and Awareness.
ChallengeDown syndrome is a genetic condition in which the 21st chromosome has a full or partial, extra copy, affecting development and independent living of individuals with Down syndrome. KDSP addresses the following multiple challenges they face: dearth of early intervention therapy programs, lack of inclusive education, limited skills development programs, inaccessible and expensive healthcare, limited avenues for parents to seek guidance and support and lack of awareness about Down syndrome. Long-Term ImpactIn the long-term, KDSP's support will enable individuals with Down syndrome to lead independent, fulfilling lives specifically through achieving their developmental milestones (walking, talking); developing physical, cognitive, social and vocational skills (art, music); receiving equal educational opportunities alongside typically developing peers in mainstream inclusive schools, leading healthy lives, having strong family support and becoming part of a more accepting and inclusive society.
