The shelter home and education support program in Mae Chan consists of two sites. The Swimming Home shelters 14 children suffering from abandonment, abuse, or neglect; while the Ban Klang Na Shelter is the home for victims of human trafficking for the duration of rehabilitation and preparation for their return home. The children and woman receive shelter, protection, life skills development training, nutritious home made meals, family outreach services, and government school education.

Challenge

Mae Chan is located in northern Thailand, the heart of the Greater Mekong Sub-region. This region is a hotspot of human trafficking, both because of several border crossings with Myanmar and Laos, and because of the vulnerable populations of ethnic minority and stateless children who reside there. Multiple socio-cultural, familial, and personal factors put our girls and many of their peers at very high risk of exploitation, especially trafficking into the commercial sex industry.

Long-Term Impact

Each day that the children are under the care of this program is another day that they are safe, healthy, cared for, and able to live more meaningful lives. The children will take with them, critical vocational and life skills, school education, human rights awareness, leadership skills, and the belief that their lives are valuable. The women living at the Ban Klang Na Shelter have the chance to pass a rehabilitation program and will receive assistance moving back to their home countries.
