Description | Wikitext | Racism is a system of advantage based on race. It is a hierarchy. It is a pandemic. Racism is so deeply embedded within US minds and US society that it is virtually impossible to escape. Racial injustice in the United States is a complex and deeply entrenched issue that has been present throughout the country's history. It manifests in various forms, including systemic racism, discrimination, and unequal access to education, housing, healthcare, and economic opportunities. One of the most significant manifestations of racial injustice in the United States is the disproportionate impact of police brutality on people of color. Black Americans are more likely to be killed by police than any other racial or ethnic group, and this disparity has been widely documented. Additionally, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, including unequal treatment by police, prosecutors, judges, and juries, have been well-documented. Black Americans are more likely to be arrested, convicted, and sentenced to longer prison terms than their white counterparts for similar offenses. Racial disparities also exist in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Black and Hispanic students are more likely to attend underfunded schools, which can limit their educational opportunities and future job prospects. People of color, particularly Black Americans, have historically faced barriers to voting, such as literacy tests and poll taxes. Today, voter ID laws and other restrictive measures can disproportionately affect minority voters. |
