This project aims to help 20 refugee women from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda living in Nairobi-Kenya to start income-generating businesses which will help them be able to take care of their families and therefore raise their living standards. Tushirikiane plans to give each of these 20 refugee women a loan of Ksh 50,000 which they will invest in small businesses, and help them save in Self-Help Groups so that they can become self-reliant and continue doing their businesses.

Challenge

Most urban refugees live in poor conditions simply because they cannot find formal jobs and find it hard to start small businesses, which are the best option to earn money. Finding capital to start income-generating activities is a big challenge and this makes them live in poor conditions. However, Tushirikiane has realised that providing them with loans to start income-generating activity is a good solution to this issue and the only way to raise the living standards of refugees in Nairobi.

Long-Term Impact

In the long run, the women who will get the capital to start small businesses will be getting income, which then will make them able to save. The project aims at helping them start small viable business, and encouraging them to save with a view to making them become self-reliant. After some time, the savings will be used to finance more projects through borrowing from the savings and paying back to keep the wheel running. This means that the number of those who will get loans will increase.
