In 2013, India was among the top 5 countries with the highest rate of child sexual abuse. A 2013 report by the Asian Centre for Human Rights revealed that sexual offenses against children in India were at an “epidemic” level – citing, over 48,000 rape cases between 2001 to 2011, and a 337% increase in child rape cases from 2001 (2,113 cases) to 2011 (7,112 cases). Child sex abuse (CSA) occurs across geographies, economic levels, and even across relationships – strangers, friends, and family members had all been perpetrators. In 2012, 9500 child and adolescent murders were reported, making India the third largest contributor to child homicide (WHO 2014, Global Health Estimates). One in 3 adolescent girls experiences violence (physical, sexual, or emotional), from significant others.

Here are some of the major issues:

Domestic Violence: Domestic violence is a serious problem in India, affecting women of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. According to the National Family Health Survey, 31% of married women have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence by their spouses.

Sexual Violence: Sexual violence is a pervasive problem in India, with incidents of rape, molestation, and harassment being reported regularly. The Nirbhaya case in 2012 brought the issue of sexual violence to the forefront of national consciousness.

Child Abuse: Child abuse is a serious issue in India, with children facing physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in their homes, schools, and communities. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, cases of child abuse have been on the rise in recent years.

Honor Killings: Honor killings are a brutal form of violence in which individuals are killed by their family members or community for allegedly bringing shame to their family or community. These killings are often carried out in the name of tradition and honor.

Female Infanticide and Feticide: The preference for sons over daughters has led to the practice of female infanticide and feticide in India. The practice of sex-selective abortion is banned in India, but it continues to be practiced illegally in some parts of the country.

Human Trafficking: Human trafficking is a major problem in India, with women and children being trafficked for forced labor and sexual exploitation. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there were over 8,000 cases of human trafficking reported in India in 2016.

These issues are deeply ingrained in India's social and cultural fabric, and addressing them requires a concerted effort from the government, civil society, and individuals.
