For the past 20 years, Afghan women, with the international community's support, have received education and worked in all walks of life. With the Taliban back in power, the gains women have made, particularly in education and women's rights, are subject to reverse. This campaign will help a non-profit social enterprise college, ASCENT, launch an online program so 1000 female students in Afghanistan and those in refugee camps in the neighboring countries can study.
Challenge
The Taliban promised women the right to get an education and pursue employment, but in practice, they have imposed restrictions that ban women's fundamental rights. So far, female employees who have dared to go to their offices have been sent home. Teachers and students are subject to gender-based segregation. Women can't leave home unless accompanied by a male relative. The ASCENT College's students are scared for their lives and fear being forced into marriages like those in the 90s.
Long-Term Impact
ASCENT's online learning program will provide a safer opportunity for current and future students, including those who live as refugees in Afghanistan's neighboring countries. The graduates will find jobs at home and in their host countries. By hiring professors from refugee camps, the project will preserve the knowledge community, which the international community invested in building over the last 20 years, and Afghanistan's future relies on it. The United Nations SDG-4 will be promoted.
