|Description=The food system in India is causing a significant strain on the planet due to the massive amount of food that is lost or wasted every year. This issue is particularly concerning as it affects vulnerable groups such as children and households. The wastage of food not only leads to economic losses but also has severe environmental consequences. The food system needs to be restructured to ensure that food is utilized efficiently and sustainably, reducing the pressure on the planet and improving the lives of those affected by food insecurity.

Humans waste 3.5 million tons of food every day resulting in around 1.3 billion tons of food loss every year. If that number doesn’t impact you, here’s some perspective - the Empire State Building weighs 365 thousand tons. Forever.

This wasted food could feed two billion people, more than double the number of undernourished individuals worldwide.

Additionally, if wasted foods were considered a country, it would be the third largest producer of carbon dioxide, behind only the United States and China. Notably, consumers in developed countries waste almost as much food as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa annually.

It doesn’t stop there. According to a The World Bank blog, 70% of all potable water is used for agriculture and if we do the math (33% of all food produced is wasted), we waste about 45 trillion liters of water every year, just with the food wastage
