Our Connect2Empower STEM robotics program focuses on mentoring with EV3 Mindstorm by working with young inner-city girls to find self-confidence, self-identity and love. Young girls will make smarter choices and put them on a path to making better life decisions. Students are given the time, space and purpose to build robots and solve open ended problems. VHF robotics programs aims to help students develop logic building, collaboration and critical thinking skills at a very young age.
Challenge
Inner city students lack access and opportunities to engage in STEM fields. Low income parents are just as interested in the success of their child in STEM areas as their wealthier counterparts, however as a result of less STEM opportunities, they are less likely to take advantage of STEM pathways due to structural barriers that emanate from living in a low income community. The huge gender gap is also a concern. We need all hands on deck to involve young girls in STEM areas.
Long-Term Impact
VHF STEM robotics program is learned through robotics and through code's application to authentic, often real world problems making concepts easy to visualize and solutions easy to test. Beyond those who will earn their living full time designing, maintaining, and installing and setting up, robots, familiarity with them will be a plus across the population.
