Since the Taliban takeover in 2021, secondary education of girls between grade 7th and 12th has been banned in most provinces. With little hope to restart working in secondary schools, we were able to move our Girls Can Code program in grade 13th and 14th in the Centre for Technology Institute, a public post-secondary vocational training centre in Kabul. Although in a different format, our training continues to educate girls with a focus on coding languages and web & graphic design.
Challenge
Afghanistan is a country struggling to achieve peace and stability. With the Taliban takeover in August 2021, the country descended in one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world and it represents the only state where women are not allowed to enrol in public secondary school (grade 7th to 12th) while they can still enrol in postsecondary education. Current limitations prevent them also to fully access job opportunities and from participating freely in society.
Long-Term Impact
Our programme not only looks at the immediate challenge of educating young women, but it is also giving them hope and providing critical skills valuable in these dark times and for the future when, hopefully, women will be allowed to reoccupy the place they deserve in society with competency and professionalism. By continuing educating women, we give a strong signal to them: we will continue to stand by them and support their quest for education and equality.
